Like the others before it, for the 13th compilation in the Punk Goes… series (which includes metal, acoustic, crunk, and classic rock), the fifth volume of Punk Goes Pop features artists from the Fearless Records roster doing post-hardcore covers of popular radio songs. This particular one is different from the last in that it spans back to the ‘80s, with Breathe Carolina's take on the King of Pop's 'Billie Jean' and the Maine's version of Cyndi Lauper’s 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun,' the latter being a highlight. However, the focus is on revising material by artists from 2010 to 2012, so we are treated to amped-up covers of hits by Gym Class Heroes, Bruno Mars, Gotye, and Kanye West. Like the other volumes from the series, the premise is more promising than the results, and instead of taking risks, the hardcore acts sound like they are going through the motions. The irony of raging, screaming pop music wears thin quickly. Even so, it would be a surprise if Fearless discontinued the series anytime soon.
